Unlike its Mastiff predecessors, the Bulldog is actually quite small and a non-sporting dog. It has a low build of about twelve to sixteen inches, but it is wide and stocky. Males weigh in the region of fifty-three to fifty-five pounds and females are around forty-nine to fifty one pounds.
As with the Mastiff, a Bulldog's head often appears as though it's too large for its body. This broad head has cheeks that should reach the ends of the dog's eyes. Like any other Bulldog, it has folds of loose skin on its head. Although the Bulldog's snout is actually very short, it accompanies a wide dark nose with huge nostrils. You'll notice it has a drastic under-bite when you look carefully.
Taking much of their general appearance from predecessors and family classes, the Bulldog possesses dark round eyes that are set far apart. It has small ears, located on the sides of its broad head. Bulldogs have a short tail, which is normally of a darker color than its coat and often the same shade as its snout.
Although Bulldog coats come in many different colors, the generally preferred shades are red or pale yellow. Other common colors are fawn and brindle or a combination of many different colors. Whilst there is no logical real reason for people's preference in color, black Bulldogs are often unwanted. The hair of the coat is short, smooth and fine, which makes it quite easy to maintain. Bathing need not be done too often, but it is important to ensure the inside of the skin folds are kept clean.
Being a fairly low maintenance breed, the Bulldog is a recommended pet for people living in condominiums, apartments or other confined living spaces. Indoors, Bulldogs tend to be quite inactive and stay put simply lying around on the floor. However, a Bulldog must still be given regular exercise, in order for it to maintain its stocky stature and release its built up energy. They are also very playful dogs, which is another reason why it is important for them to get enough time outdoors.
It is also important to keep Bulldogs warm. Because of the type of coat it has, a Bulldog tends to feel cold very easily. This can cause it to be sick quite often. Although it does better with warm climates, the Bulldog also has difficulty in cooling when subjected to temperatures that are too high. This makes Bulldogs very susceptible to heat stroke.
All in all, the Bulldog makes a great pet. When looked after properly, it's not very difficult to maintain and keep satisfied. Although some Bulldogs live longer, generally they make a good pet for about eight years. Breeding can be somewhat difficult though, because Bulldogs often require a caesarian section to give birth. The average litter is about four to five pups, but can be as many as nine.
