Many people often don't even consider Bulldogs when looking for a pet, simply because of their stocky stature, and what's perceived as a fierce appearance. That's a shame, because the reality is that Bulldogs make very good family pets.

Despite appearances, Bulldogs are actually quite gentle and not pumped up with hyperactive "killer" energy. Truth be told, they are pretty lazy dogs, making them perfect for small homes or apartments. Thanks to their gentle nature, even families with small children fair well with Bulldogs. Although most Bulldogs are very playful as puppies, they can be somewhat restless at that age. But as they grow into mature adults they tend to become calm and composed.

Bulldogs can be stubborn and hardheaded, sometimes displaying a sense of mischief. It's a dog that may at times completely disregard orders and commands from its master. Generally though, this is nothing more than the attention seeking antics you might expect in a child from time to time.

Bulldogs are known to be extremely affectionate towards their owners, and especially to little children. They also display intense loyalty to the family. But they do try and get as much attention from the family as they can. It's important to understand this desire for attention if you are to keep your pet Bulldog happy. The less human attention it gets, the more it will seek it. And if it continues to receive very little, your pet can become quite destructive.

This behavior shouldn't be confused with a lack of discipline though. All that's required to rectify the situation is an owner who gives their Bulldog the attention it needs. At the same time, it's important not to spoil the dog by always giving it everything it wants. Your Bulldog has to understand that it is dominated by a master. Simply recognizing that's the case will make Bully more obedient.

It would be a mistake to confuse the Bulldog’s affection with a lack of courage. Because of their extreme loyalty and sense of responsibility towards their family, Bulldogs are more than capable of warding off intruders from your home. Bulldogs are extremely wary of strangers and prefer to be around familiar people. This makes the Bulldog an excellent breed to choose when you want a great family pet without sacrificing the dog's use for security. It will make sure you know about any strangers that come too close!

The Bulldog is also the perfect choice for families who already have other pets in the household. It's a breed that gets along with other animals, and doesn't tend to play rough, especially when indoors. They will share living space with other animals without problems, and sometimes even welcome the company. But when it comes to strange animals from outside its household, the story is somewhat different. Then it tends to be very guarded and tries to send them away.

As you can see, the Bulldog is the perfect breed for families with relatively small living spaces, families who keep other pets, and people who like to lavish plenty of attention on their pets. Affectionate and loyal but guarded. The Bulldog is a pet that can be kept indoors with small children, yet still make you feel safe in relation to strange people or animals. All in all, a great family pet, although perhaps a little frustrating for those who seek overly disciplined dogs!
