Bulldogs make excellent pets because they are fairly easy to keep. They are quite happy with small living spaces and tend to stay put when they are indoors. Most apartment renters prefer Bulldogs over other breeds because they usually don't need a yard to walk around in.

Bulldogs still need some exercise though, simply to use up the energy that they have stored while indoors. Being a fairly lazy dog, just a few minutes of jogging or walking is sufficient. With that in mind, you can perhaps understand why it's important to regulate a Bulldog's food intake.

Bulldogs must not be overfeed and have to be kept on a fairly strict diet. This is the only way to ensure the Bulldog maintains its stocky stature and continues to be healthy. Because Bulldogs often lack the desire to exercise, overfeeding can quickly lead to obesity and ill health.

A Bulldog's coat is also pretty low-maintenance and easy to look after. Because the fur of a Bulldog is very short and smooth, all it really needs is a daily brushing with a bristle brush. The short hair enables air to reach the dogs skin, and for this reason Bulldogs usually don't require regular bathing unless particularly dirty. However, it's a good idea to regularly wipe Bulldogs with a damp cloth, because they can accumulate odor-emitting dirt between the folds of their skin.

Bad breath is generally not much of a problem either. While with some breeds it's necessary to brush the dogs teeth often, Bulldogs do not tend to be beset with bad breath. At least nothing more severe than can be controlled with intermittent brushing and dog chews. Of course, this can differ according to the kind of food the dog eats.

To keep a Bulldog comfortable, it is important that its environment is maintained at the right temperature. Bulldogs do not adapt well to changes in temperature. Not only do they have difficulty keeping warm in cold weather, they also find it hard to adjust to the heat when it gets too warm. Bulldogs are not the type of dog that you can leave in the car or out in the yard under the heat of the sun. Heat stroke is a common problem with this breed.

The Bulldog is also usually at its laziest during times of warm weather. It will often lie down on the floor keeping movement to a minimum. As a result, Bulldogs sometimes get heat rashes on their belly. To help avoid this, it's a good idea to provide a cold surface to lie on. It's should also be noted that whenever it gets especially warm, Bulldogs need to be powdered in order to cope with the heat. When powdering, give special attention to the the areas within its skin folds and tail.

Bulldogs do have some health issues, but not to a degree severe enough to prevent them making good house pets. One of the common health problems of Bulldogs relate to its respiratory system. Because of the size of their windpipes, Bulldogs have some breathing problems. However, it is rarely a major issue as long as they are given good ventilation.
